Obsidian for VCE Students: Turn Your Notes Into a Second Brain
How can VCE students use Obsidian to study?
Obsidian is a free note-taking app that stores your notes as plain text files on your own computer and lets you link them together, so related ideas connect like a web instead of sitting in separate documents you never reopen. For VCE, the setup that works is simple: one folder per subject, a short note per concept, and a link every time one concept depends on another (those links are your “second brain”). Then you turn those notes into revision by following the links and quizzing yourself, and you can layer AI on top (NotebookLM or ChatGPT, pointed at your own notes) to summarise and test you. The one thing to know up front: Obsidian organises what you know, it does not know VCAA and it will not tell you whether your answer would get the marks.
I remember having notes everywhere and revising from none of them
I remember finishing a topic with notes in a OneNote tab, some in a Google Doc, a few photos of the whiteboard, and a worksheet shoved in my bag. Then a week before the SAC I’d go to revise and have no idea where anything was, so I’d just reread the textbook from scratch and lose a night to it.
The problem was never that I didn’t take notes. It was that my notes didn’t connect to each other, so I could never follow a thread from “I’m stuck on this” back to the thing it actually depended on. Obsidian fixes exactly that, and it’s free, so it’s worth twenty minutes to set up properly.
This is the Obsidian-specific how-to. If you want the general method behind it (how to actually take notes worth revising from, with any app), that’s the note-taking method guide. This piece is the setup.
I’m not recommending this from the outside. I run EquateIt’s actual tutoring delivery on Obsidian: one folder per student, and inside each one a profile note (year level, curriculum alignment, current focus, goals) plus a folder per topic, with a numbered sequence of notes in each — a topic checklist, a practice set targeted at that student’s actual weaknesses, worked solutions, a formula sheet, and a “how to solve every problem type” reference. It’s the same folder-and-link structure this post is about to walk you through, just running a tutoring business instead of a single subject.
What Obsidian actually is (in plain terms)
Three things matter, and none of them cost anything for personal use:
- Your notes are plain text files you own. Obsidian saves everything as markdown files in a folder on your computer (a “vault”). No account needed, nothing locked in someone’s cloud. You can open them in any app, back them up to a USB, and they still work in ten years.
- You link notes together. Type
[[and start a note’s name, and you’ve made a link. Click it, you’re there. This is the whole point: VCE concepts depend on each other, and links let your notes mirror that. - Backlinks show you what connects in. Every note has a “linked mentions” panel showing every other note that links to it. So when you open “Chain Rule”, you instantly see every topic that needed it. That web of connections is what people mean by a “second brain”.
There’s also a graph view (a visual map of every note and link) and a big library of community plugins if you want more later. Ignore most of it at the start. The folders and the links are 90% of the value.
If you do want one plugin, make it Excalidraw. It’s a whiteboard built into a note, so you can draw a graph, a diagram, or work through a geometry problem by hand and keep it attached to the concept it belongs to, instead of a photo of paper shoved in a folder somewhere. I wouldn’t bother with much else starting out.
The setup: a folder per subject
Keep it boring on purpose, so you never have to think about where something goes.
Make one folder per subject:
Maths MethodsSpecialistEnglishChemistry- …one per subject you’re sitting.
Inside each, make one note per concept, not one giant note per topic. So in Maths Methods you’d have separate notes for “Differentiation”, “Chain Rule”, “Product Rule”, “Optimisation”, and so on. Small notes are the trick. A note you can read in thirty seconds is a note you’ll actually revise from, and small notes link to each other far more naturally than huge ones.
A simple shape for each concept note:
- What it is (a line or two, in your own words)
- The method / steps (how you actually do it)
- A worked example (one is enough)
- Where I get it wrong (your real mistakes — this is the most valuable part)
- Links to the concepts this one depends on
That “where I get it wrong” line is the one most people skip, and it’s the one that saves the marks. Write the mistake down the moment you make it, so you don’t make it again in the SAC.

“Applications of Differentiation” is the note that actually shows up in exam questions, and it links back to every rule it depends on. Its backlinks panel becomes the real map of what needs to be solid before that topic makes sense.
The part that makes it a “second brain”: linking concepts
Here’s where Obsidian stops being a tidier OneNote and starts being a brain.
Whenever one concept depends on another, link them. In your “Chain Rule” note, link Differentiation. In “Optimisation”, link [[Chain Rule]] and Differentiation. You’re not making extra work, you’re recording how the subject actually fits together, which is the thing VCAA is really testing.
Two things happen once you do this:
- You can follow a thread. Stuck on Optimisation? Open the note, click back through
[[Chain Rule]]toDifferentiation, and you’ve found the exact link in the chain where your understanding breaks. No more rereading a whole chapter to find the one bit you forgot. - Backlinks reveal the load-bearing concepts. Open “Differentiation” and the linked-mentions panel shows ten other notes pointing at it. That’s Obsidian telling you this concept holds up half the subject, so it’s worth being airtight on it. So you don’t walk into the exam solid on the fancy stuff but shaky on the thing everything rests on.
That’s the second brain. Not magic, just your notes wired up the way the subject actually is — and the payoff isn’t limited to one subject area. Calculus links across to Trigonometry, because differentiating trig functions leans on trig identities you covered earlier. Calculus links across to Probability too, because continuous probability distributions use integrals. Once those links exist, you can see and move between the concepts that actually depend on each other, instead of studying each topic in isolation and missing that they’re the same underlying idea showing up twice.
Turning notes into revision (not just storage)
A note system is worthless if it’s a place notes go to die. Three ways to make Obsidian revision instead of storage:
- Follow the links, don’t reread the textbook. Start at a hard concept and click backwards through its dependencies. You’re revising in the order your understanding actually needs, not the order a textbook chose.
- Turn “where I get it wrong” into a checklist. Pull every mistake line across a subject into one note called something like “Methods — my traps”. Read it the morning of the SAC. So you don’t end up making the same three errors you’ve already caught yourself making all term.
- Quiz yourself off your own notes. Open a concept note, cover the method, and try to rewrite it from memory. If you can’t, that’s your revision target found in ten seconds.
The real routine, the week before a SAC or exam: start with a practice test or a set of questions to actually find your weaknesses, rather than guessing which topics feel shaky. Then go through the notes for whatever came up weak and reread them properly. Then keep doing questions on that area, and write the gaps you find straight into the relevant note as you go. It’s a loop, not a one-off read-through: test, find the gap, reread, practise, update the note, repeat.
Layering AI on top of your Obsidian notes
This is where Obsidian gets genuinely powerful, and where you have to be careful.
Because your notes are plain text files, you can point AI straight at them:
- NotebookLM: upload a subject’s notes as sources and it answers only from them, builds summaries, and makes an audio overview you can listen to on the bus. Because it’s grounded in your own notes, it makes things up far less than a general chatbot.
- ChatGPT or Claude: paste a concept note in and ask it to test you, explain a step you wrote badly, or find gaps in your own explanation.
- Obsidian’s own AI plugins exist too, if you want the AI inside the app.
The catch, and it’s the same catch as every AI study tool: AI on top of your notes still hallucinates, especially in maths. A grounded tool like NotebookLM is better behaved, but “better behaved” is not “right about VCAA maths”. If your note has a wrong method in it, the AI will happily build a confident summary around the wrong method. Garbage in, confident garbage out. Treat any maths working it gives you as a draft to check, never as a marking scheme.

Even NotebookLM, grounded in your own notes, still sometimes gets a maths step wrong or answers slightly outside what the actual study design covers. It’s a genuine improvement on a general chatbot making things up from nothing, but “less likely to hallucinate” isn’t the same as “knows VCAA.” Closing that gap properly needs a tool actually built and trained against the curriculum, not a general-purpose AI pointed at your notes — which is exactly the layer EquateIt is for.
If you’re technical: giving an AI assistant a real memory of your vault
This part isn’t for most VCE students — skip it unless you already write code or use a tool like Claude Code. Because your Obsidian vault is just plain text files, you can connect an AI coding assistant directly to it with the Local REST API community plugin, using MCP (the protocol that lets an AI tool talk to an app on your computer). Once that connection exists, the AI can read your notes for context and, more usefully, write to them: every time I ask an AI something worth keeping, I have it save a note into Obsidian. That means it’s not just answering a one-off question, it’s building a queryable, permanent record I can search later, and the AI itself can read that same note back the next time the topic comes up. It’s the same “second brain” idea this whole post is about, just with an AI assistant reading and writing to it instead of only you.
What Obsidian can’t do (the honest bit)
Obsidian is the best free way I know to organise what you know. But organising what you know is not the same as knowing it’ll hold up under exam conditions, and it’s worth being clear about the gap:
- It doesn’t know VCAA. Your notes are only as right as you are. If you’ve quietly learned a method that loses marks, Obsidian will store it beautifully and never warn you.
- It doesn’t mark you. It can’t tell you whether your worked example would actually score, or where you’d drop a mark on method versus answer.
- The AI you layer on top doesn’t fix either of those. It summarises and tests you on your notes, but it can’t tell you your notes are wrong about the study design.
So the workflow that actually works is two layers, the same two layers as every smart AI study setup:
- Obsidian (plus AI) to organise and understand what you know, and how it connects.
- A VCAA-aligned tool to check it’ll actually get the marks, with real practice questions marked the way VCAA marks.

Two honest, real patterns I see. One: a student whose notes were genuinely beautiful — because he’d spent most of his time redoing them until they looked perfect, instead of spending that time on practice questions. Pretty notes felt like progress, but they weren’t where the marks were. Two, more common: a student gets a question or a concept wrong in class and never flags it or adds it to their notes. Then, the week before the SAC, they sit down to build a summary sheet and genuinely can’t remember what they don’t know — because the one system that was supposed to catch it never got told.
The five-minute version
If you read none of the above, do this:
- Make one folder per subject.
- One small note per concept (what it is, method, one example, where I get it wrong).
- Link
conceptsto the concepts they depend on. - Revise by following the links and reading your “traps” note.
- Point NotebookLM or ChatGPT at your notes to test you, but check its maths.
- Use a VCAA-aligned tool to confirm you’d actually get the marks.
The students who get the most out of a note system aren’t the ones with the prettiest vault. They’re the ones whose notes connect, who revise from them, and who never trust their own notes (or an AI) to be right about VCAA without checking.
