How do you actually use AI to study, step by step?
The workflow that actually works is: attempt the question yourself first, bring AI your specific attempt (not the bare question), ask it a precise question rather than an open one, get it to explain back to you where your reasoning broke rather than just handing you a new answer, and only then use it to generate more practice on that exact gap. The mistake almost every student makes is skipping straight to “solve this for me” — which gets you an answer, but not understanding, and for VCE maths specifically, not even a reliable answer.

Step 1 — do the work first, then bring AI your attempt
This is the single biggest difference between students who get real value out of AI and students who use it as a shortcut that quietly stops them learning anything. The instinct is to paste in the bare question the moment you’re stuck. Don’t. Attempt it yourself first — even a messy, incomplete attempt — and bring AI that, not the blank question.
This isn’t just good study advice in general; it’s the same principle I’ve used teaching people to use Claude for genuinely hard technical work, not just VCE study: the wrong use is “solve this for me.” The right use is “here’s my approach — what am I missing or misunderstanding?” You get a fundamentally different, more useful answer when the AI is reacting to your actual reasoning instead of generating a solution from scratch, and — just as importantly — you’ve already done the thinking that makes the feedback stick. It’s the same mechanism behind why attempting a question before checking the answer beats passive re-reading{target=“_blank”} in controlled classroom studies.
Step 2 — ask a specific question, not an open one
“What do you see?” gets you a description. “I expected the derivative to be negative here because the function is decreasing, but I got a positive value — what am I missing?” gets you an actual diagnosis. The difference is precision: a specific question that states what you expected, what you got, and where the gap is, forces a specific answer back. An open question invites a generic, unfocused one.
For VCE this looks like: “I used the product rule here and got this result, but the worked answer has a different sign in the second term — where did I lose the sign?” instead of “is this right?” The first version gets you the actual line where you went wrong. The second gets you a yes or no that doesn’t teach you anything if the answer is no.
Step 3 — make it explain your mistake back to you
Once you’ve got a disagreement between your attempt and the AI’s answer, don’t just take the AI’s version and move on. Ask it to explain, in plain terms, exactly which step diverged and why — then check that explanation against your own understanding of the method, not just accept it. This is the step most students skip, and it’s the one that actually converts a “got it wrong” into a lesson that doesn’t repeat.
If you can’t yet explain the mistake back in your own words after the AI has explained it to you, you haven’t actually learned it — you’ve just been told the answer a second way. That’s worth noticing, because it’s the signal to slow down, not the signal to move to the next question.
Step 4 — turn it into a Socratic tutor with one instruction
By default, most chatbots will hand you a full worked solution the second you ask for one — which is exactly the opposite of what builds understanding. You can flip this with a single instruction: tell it explicitly not to give you the answer, and instead to ask you guiding questions one at a time until you reach it yourself.

Step 5 — use it to build your revision, not do your revision
Once you know which specific skill you’re weak on — not “I’m bad at Methods,” but “I keep losing marks on related rates” — that’s the point where AI is genuinely efficient to lean on. Ask it to generate five fresh practice questions on exactly that skill, at a similar difficulty to what you’ve been getting wrong. This is the highest-leverage use of AI in the whole workflow, because it’s doing the tedious part (finding or writing more practice) rather than the part that actually builds your skill (working through it).
The trap here is using this step first, before you’ve actually diagnosed the specific gap in steps 1–3. Generic “give me practice questions on calculus” without a target just produces more of the same problem you already have.
What does this actually look like across a study session?
Here’s the workflow end to end, on a single topic:
- Attempt a related-rates question from your textbook or a past SAC, on paper, properly.
- Compare your working against the answer. Found a mismatch? Bring AI your actual working plus the specific point of disagreement.
- Ask it to explain which step diverged and why — then explain it back in your own words before moving on.
- If you’re still shaky on the underlying concept (not just this one question), switch to Socratic mode: ask it to walk you toward the next similar question with hints, not answers.
- Once the concept clicks, ask it to generate three or four fresh related-rates questions at the same difficulty, and work through those without help.

That’s a genuinely different session to “paste question, copy answer, move on” — and it’s the difference between using AI to study and using AI to avoid studying.
Where does this workflow break down?
Two places, honestly. First: this workflow takes more discipline than the shortcut version, and on a night when you’re exhausted and just need an answer to move on, you’ll be tempted to skip straight to step 5’s output. That’s a real trade-off, not a flaw in the method — some nights, getting through the content matters more than doing it the “right” way, and that’s a fair call to make consciously rather than by default.
Second, and more structurally: none of this workflow fixes the accuracy problem covered in 5 things AI gets wrong about VCE maths.
