Why EquateIt for ATAR Coaching

ATAR coaching is different from general tutoring. Where general tutoring fills gaps across the syllabus, ATAR coaching starts with a different question: which study scores, in which subjects, will most efficiently lift your ATAR? The answer depends on scaling, difficulty and where each subject currently sits relative to the student's potential. Our ATAR coaching sessions are built around this analysis first. We identify the two or three subjects with the most realistic improvement potential — often a subject where a student is strong but losing marks on exam technique rather than content — and build a focused plan for each. For VCE Maths subjects, we lean heavily on VCAA past-paper analysis: every mark-loser across the last five years, ranked by frequency. For Sciences, the emphasis is on SAC preparation and extended-response technique. Students work through our platform between sessions for daily practice. Most students who specifically target ATAR coaching are in their second half of Year 12 — but starting earlier in the year gives more room to improve before the study score deadline.

Frequently asked questions

How much can ATAR coaching actually improve my score?

It depends on where you start and how consistently you work between sessions. Students in the 25–35 range in a VCE Maths subject who attend weekly tutoring through a full term and complete platform practice consistently typically move up one or two raw bands. Students targeting 40+ who already have strong content knowledge often see the biggest gains from exam technique.

Which VCE subjects scale best for ATAR?

In Victoria, Specialist Mathematics, Latin and Music Performance have historically scaled highest. Mathematical Methods, Chemistry and Physics also scale positively. The right strategy isn't to always take the highest-scaling subject — it's to take subjects where the student can genuinely compete for high raw marks.

When should Year 12 ATAR coaching begin?

Ideally, ATAR coaching for Year 12 starts at the beginning of Term 1, giving time to diagnose, plan and cover all high-yield topics before the exam crunch. Term 3 starts are still valuable but shift almost entirely to past-paper practice and high-yield topic consolidation.

Do you provide ATAR subject selection advice for Year 11?

Yes. As part of the free assessment for Year 10 or early Year 11 students, we talk through subject selection — which subjects suit the student's strengths, which have the best scaling given realistic performance levels, and how different combinations interact on the ATAR.
