Why EquateIt for Primary School tutoring

Primary school tutoring is almost always about confidence as much as content. By Years 5 and 6, students who have fallen behind in Maths begin to believe they're "not a Maths person" — a belief that shapes their secondary school pathway years before they set foot in Year 7. Our primary school tutors work to reverse this. The most important thing at this level is identifying exactly where understanding broke down — often a concept as specific as place value, fractions or times tables — and rebuilding from that point with the right pace and encouragement. Sessions are short, focused and structured to deliver visible wins quickly. Every child wants to feel competent. A good primary tutor makes that feeling available fast, which changes a student's relationship with the subject entirely. We also provide NAPLAN preparation for Year 3 and Year 5 students, and general Maths and English foundation building for primary students whose families want to get ahead rather than catch up. All primary sessions are available in-home across Melbourne and online across Victoria.

Frequently asked questions

What age is appropriate to start a primary school tutor?

From Year 3 (around age 8–9) is when structured 1-on-1 tutoring becomes most effective. From Year 3 onwards, school Maths introduces multiplication, fractions and problem-solving — areas where a tutor can give the individual attention and pace a classroom can't.

How do you keep primary school children engaged in tutoring sessions?

Primary tutors are selected for their ability to make sessions feel collaborative and engaging — not more school. Sessions use worked examples, games and problems pitched just above the student's comfort level. Progress is tracked so students can see what they've improved over time.

Do you offer NAPLAN preparation?

Yes. We provide NAPLAN preparation for Year 3 and Year 5 students, focusing on the Numeracy and Reading components. NAPLAN tutoring covers the test format, time management and the specific question types that appear each year. Most NAPLAN preparation starts 8–12 weeks before the test date.

My child is in Year 6 and struggling — should we get a tutor before secondary school?

Yes, and the sooner the better. The transition from primary to secondary school Maths is where many students who had been managing suddenly fall behind — algebra, negative numbers and abstract thinking arrive quickly. A Year 6 student who enters Year 7 with confident number sense and solid fractions has a very different first year of secondary Maths than one who doesn't.
