How much does a tutor cost in Australia?

In 2026, private one-on-one tutoring in Australia typically costs $40 to $120 per hour. University-student tutors sit at the lower end ($40–$65), experienced or qualified tutors around $60–$95, and VCE or subject specialists $80–$120 — higher for in-demand subjects like Specialist Maths, Chemistry and Physics. Tutoring-centre group classes run roughly $40–$60 per hour per student, and the same tutor is usually $10–$20 cheaper online than in-person. For the full breakdown, see how much a tutor costs in Australia.

What drives the price

  • Year level and subject. Senior, scored subjects (VCE Units 3 & 4) cost more than primary or junior secondary — the tutor needs current study-design and exam expertise.
  • Tutor expertise. A specialist who scored 45+ in the exact subject commands more per hour, and usually needs fewer sessions to move the needle.
  • Private vs group. One-on-one costs more per hour than a centre's group class, but every minute is spent on your student.
  • In-person vs online. In-home tutoring carries travel time; online removes it, so the same tutor is often cheaper online.
  • Lock-in vs casual. Term contracts, enrolment fees and material fees add to the sticker rate. Pay-as-you-go with no lock-in is usually better value.

Cheapest isn't the same as best value

The real cost of tutoring isn't the hourly rate — it's the rate divided by the progress. A $50/hr tutor who needs twenty sessions to fix a gap is more expensive than an $90/hr specialist who fixes it in six. When you compare quotes, ask whether the tutor specialises in the exact subject and year level, whether the session is built around a diagnosis of where marks are being lost, and whether there are hidden enrolment or material fees on top of the hourly rate.

How much does a tutor cost in Australia?

In 2026, private one-on-one tutoring in Australia typically costs between $40 and $120 per hour. University-student tutors sit at the lower end ($40–$65), experienced or qualified tutors around $60–$95, and VCE or subject specialists $80–$120. Tutoring-centre group classes run roughly $40–$60 per hour per student, and online tutoring is usually $10–$20 per hour cheaper than in-person with the same tutor.

Is a private tutor or a tutoring centre cheaper?

A tutoring-centre group class is cheaper per hour, but the attention is shared across several students. Private one-on-one tutoring costs more per hour and every minute is spent on your child specifically, which usually means fewer sessions are needed to fix a specific gap.

Is online tutoring cheaper than in-person?

Usually, yes. The same tutor is often $10–$20 per hour cheaper online than in-person because there is no travel time. For Maths and Science, a shared digital whiteboard makes online sessions close to in-person in effectiveness.

What makes a tutor cost more?

The biggest factors are year level and subject (senior, scored subjects like VCE Specialist Maths, Chemistry and Physics cost more), the tutor’s expertise and track record, one-on-one versus group, in-person versus online, and whether there are lock-in contracts or enrolment fees on top of the hourly rate.

How much does a VCE tutor cost?

A VCE subject specialist typically costs $80–$120 per hour for private in-person tutoring, higher for in-demand subjects like Specialist Maths, Chemistry and Physics. Online is usually cheaper. EquateIt’s VCE rate is $70/hr in-person and $60/hr online, one-on-one, with no lock-in contracts.

Is a cheaper tutor worse value?

Not necessarily — but the real cost of tutoring is the rate divided by the progress, not the hourly rate alone. A $50/hr tutor who needs twenty sessions to fix a gap is more expensive than a $90/hr specialist who fixes it in six. Compare on subject fit and results, not just price.
