Why EquateIt for Selective Entry Test Prep

Victoria's selective high schools — Melbourne High School, Melbourne Girls High School, Mac.Robertson Girls High School, Nossal High School, Suzanne Cory High School and University High School — are among the most competitive secondary schools in Australia. Entry is via the VTAC Selective Entry Assessment, testing Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and Written Expression. Most families underestimate how specific this preparation needs to be. General tutoring helps — but students who score well on the selective entry test practise the exact question types under the exact time constraints of the real test. Our selective entry preparation is question-type focused: tutors break down each test domain, teach the most efficient approaches to each question type, and run timed practice papers with detailed scoring and feedback. Students typically start preparation in Year 7 for Year 8 entry or Year 8 for Year 9 entry, and achieve the best outcomes with 12–16 weeks of focused preparation. We offer in-person and online sessions across Melbourne and Victoria.

Frequently asked questions

Which selective high schools does EquateIt prepare students for?

We prepare students for all six Victorian selective high schools accessed via the VTAC test: Melbourne High School, Melbourne Girls High School, Mac.Robertson Girls High School, Nossal High School, Suzanne Cory High School and University High School. All use the same VTAC Selective Entry Assessment for Year 8 entry.

What does the Victorian Selective Entry Assessment include?

The VTAC SEA has five components: Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and Written Expression. Each section is timed and the test is taken in a single sitting. Numerical Reasoning and Maths together form a significant portion of the scoring — strong numeracy preparation provides a double benefit.

When should selective entry preparation begin?

Most students begin preparation 12–16 weeks before the test date (which falls in June each year for Year 8 entry). Starting in February or March of the application year gives enough time to cover all five domains thoroughly. Students who are weaker in Verbal Reasoning or Written Expression may need to start earlier, as these skills develop more gradually than Maths.

Is there a difference between preparing for selective entry and NAPLAN?

Yes, significantly. The Selective Entry test is considerably harder — it's designed to differentiate between high-achieving students, not assess grade-level benchmarks. NAPLAN preparation is useful background but not sufficient. Selective entry preparation focuses specifically on the higher difficulty and more abstract question formats the VTAC SEA uses.
