VCE Mathematical Methods — Free Study Notes

Mathematical Methods is the most widely studied VCE maths subject and the gateway to science, engineering and commerce degrees. These notes cover every major topic area aligned to the VCAA study design — from functions and algebra through to calculus and statistics. Each topic page includes key formulas, VCAA-style practice questions and the most common mistakes students make in SACs and the final exam.

Choose a topic below for key notes, formulas, practice questions and common mistakes.

Topic 1

Functions and Graphs

Functions and graphs underpin almost every other topic in Mathematical Methods. A solid understanding of domain, range and transformations is essential before tackling calculus. This topic covers the main function types you need to know for SACs and the final exam, along with how transformations shift, reflect and scale their graphs.

Topic 2

Algebra and Equations

Algebraic fluency is the foundation of every other Methods topic. Students who struggle with calculus almost always have gaps in algebra — sign errors, incorrect factoring or missing solutions. This page covers the key algebraic techniques for Units 1–4, with a focus on the exact processes examiners reward in full working.

Topic 3

Calculus

Calculus is the highest-weighted topic in Mathematical Methods and the one where exam marks cluster most tightly. Differentiation finds rates of change and stationary points; integration finds areas and antiderivatives. Mastering both — including the chain, product and quotient rules — and knowing when to apply each is what separates a mid-band score from a high one.

Topic 4

Probability and Statistics

Probability and statistics is Unit 4 of Mathematical Methods and one of the most mark-rich sections of the final exam. The binomial and normal distributions, expected value and conditional probability all appear annually. Students often lose marks not because they don't understand the concept but because of notation errors or using the wrong distribution — this page covers the key distinctions clearly.
